World Bank project to irrigate Pudukottai, Thanjavur dists
Pudukottai, May 5 (UNI) The World Bank-funded Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation and Water Resources Management (IAMWARM) Project will be implemented in the Agniyar and Ambuliyar sub-basins in Pudukottai and Thanjavur districts respectively at a cost of Rs 76.23 crore.
The project aimed at providing higher returns to agricultural produce through coordinated efforts by various departments like Agriculture, Public Works, Water Resources, Agricultural Engineering, Horticulture, Agricultural Marketing and Agri Business and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University during the current fiscal, according to official sources.
The sources said that while Rs 51.48 crore would be spent on the Agniyar sub-basin, the balance had been allotted to the Ambuliyar sub-basin. The project would ensure irrigation facility to 12,016 hectares in Agniyar sub-basin, including 8,476 hectares here, and 3,540 hectares in Thanjavur district.
They said works such as reconstruction of sluices, weirs and building check-dams would be taken up by the Water Resources Department, while the Agri Business would ensure assured marketing facility through tie-up with industries.
