Tension grips over assault of van driver in TN
Ramanathapuram, May 5 (UNI) Tension grips the coastal hamlet of Keezhakkarai in Ramanathapuram over the assault of a van driver by the members of a minority outfit for allegedly having illicit affairs with a woman belonging to their community today.
A large number of shops downed their shutters for the second-day, backed by some Hindu outfits, demanding immediate arrest of culprits behind the attack.
Security was tightened in Keezhakkarai to prevent any untoward incident. The situation was still tense, but now under control, with the deployment of Armed Reserve police.
The driver Jayamurugan of Maruthanthoppu village in the district was tied to a tree and beaten up severely by members of the minority outfit, last evening for allegedly having illicit affairs with a woman from their community. He was treated at the government hospital, here.
The relatives and supporters of the driver assembled at the busy Keezhakkarai-Erwadi main road this evening, creating a tensed situation. But, police immediately intervened and pacified them to disperse with an assurance that the culprits would be apprehended soon.
