Record hike in income tax collection in Bihar

Patna, May 5 (UNI) With a record 29 per cent growth in collection of income taxes last year,Bihar has now become one of the highest revenue generating states, official sources claimed today.

Thanks to increased vigilance and certain coercive measures adopted by the department,the amount of taxes paid by the assessees had improved substantially from Rs 2035.1 crores during 2006-07 to Rs 2623.7 crores last year(2007-08)recording an increase of nearly Rs 600 crores in one year,the sources informed.

Claiming that similar trend was being continued in the current fiscal too,the sources said during last month the collection of taxes had gone up by about 50 per cent from the corresponding period of last year and more than 70 per cent from the previous year.

Stating that IT collection from Patna,Muzaffarpur,Samastipur, Betiah and other major cities had recorded the maximum growth, the sources said this was possible not only because of the increased vigilance but also because of the increased awareness among the general assessees.

''Following our constant efforts the awareness and importance of filing IT returns among the assessees in Bihar has increased manifold which in turn helped record the unprecedented growth in collection,'' the sources added.
