Chandigarh, May 5 (UNI) As wheat procurement touched 94 lakh tonnes today, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal announced that Punjab may procure 100 lakh tonnes as the yield this year was 40 per cent more than the previous year.
Mr Badal made this announcement at a public rally at Mohali today.
The Chief Minister has already promised 90 lakh tonnes of wheat for the central food pool, which is 10 lakh tonnes more than the committment he made to Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar last month.
Meanwhile an official spokesman said that the six government agencies and private millers had procured more than 93.70 lakh tonnes of wheat in Punjab till yesterday evening. Private millers had lifted another 2,43,247 tonnes.
Of the total procurement, 89.04 lakh tonnes had been procured for the central pool and 2,22,823 tonnes for the state pool.
Ferozepur district with 10,74,879 tonnes was leading in procurement operations in the country, followed by Sangrur district with 9,20,642 tonnes and Ludhiana district with 8,13,055 tonnes.
The Punjab Government and FCI had made a payment of more than Rs 8916 crore to the farmers of the state for wheat procured upto May 3. The state Government has already allocated Rs 11,116 crore to the six government agencies for ensuring hassle free payment to the farmers.
