By Staff

Mumbai, May 5 (UNI) Mighty Mumbai City has made it to the finals in the men's and women's sections of the Rajiv Gandhi Gold Cup Kabaddi Tournament, alongwith Raigad and Thane respectively.

In the tournament, organised by the Ramsheth Thakur Samajik Vikas Mandal, at the Changu Kana Thakur College grounds in Panvel near here today, Mumbai City beat back the challenge of Pune 17-13 in the men's section, while their women's whipped Satara 40-14 to enter the title round.

On the other hand, hosts Raigad beat Thane with consummate ease by a 28-16 margin. In the women's section, Thane beat the Nashik women quite easily at 39-19, to set a up a title clash against Mumbai City.

The tournament carries prize money worth Rs 6.5 lakhs, of which a lakh and more will go to the winners in either sections.

Mumbai City did well to beat Pune, who had entered the semi finals by virtue of having earned a bye. But Mumbai got better of their seeded rivals as Asian Games gold medalist Gaurav Shetty and Surendra Thorwe of Mumbai Police raided their rivals systematically to earn a 8-6 lead at the break, with Kisan Bote and Subhash Sail also pulling up their weight in defence, it became difficult for the Pune attach led by Mahindra's Pravin Newale. Pravin alongwith Maschindra Landge tried their level best, but victory eluded them in the end.

The second semi finals was expected to be a tough affair, but international Ashish Mhatre led his team admirably against Thane who had Maharashtra captain Jitesh Joshi and Prashant Chavan in their ranks, with Anil Patil coming with good raids and Sachin Patil laying good traps Raigad raced away to an easy victory.

In the women's semi finals veteran Gautami Aroskar used her experience to lead Thane to an easy victory over Nashik. Shweta Rane excelled in defence for Thane. The Nashik raiders had no clue as they kept on falling into the well laid traps time and again. For Nashik Sheetal Dane fought a losing battle. For Mumbai City Meghali Korgaonkar as usual went on the rampage and with able support from Swapnali Mhaskar and Snehal Salunkhe, she destroyed Satara.
