New Delhi, May 4 (UNI) To enhance security and prevent incidents of eveteasing at Metro stations, all the 59 stations will be put under closed circuit camera surveillance from tomorrow.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has installed 1237 Close Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) at all Metro stations located between Shahdara - Rithala, Central Secretariat - Vishwa Vidyalaya and Indraprastha-Dwarka (Sector 9), DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said.

''The installation of CCTVs at the Metro stations has been done to ensure better security for passengers who use the Metro system and this would also help in closer scrutiny and surveillance of anybody found moving about in suspicious circumstances, as all movements on the Metro premises will be watched, monitored and observed by Metro and security personnel at the monitoring stations located at the stations and the Operational Control Centre.

It will also act as a deterrent to potential eve-teasers and those who cause nuisance to other passengers on the Metro premises as they can be taken up under the Delhi Metro (Operations and Maintenance) Act 2002 which provides for stringent penalties for those violating the provisions of the Act, since visual recording of their actions will now be available with the authorities,''Mr Dayal said.

The maximum number of cameras has been installed at Kashmere Gate which has 58 CCTV cameras and Rajiv Chowk which has 47 cameras.

In general, every elevated station of the Metro will be scanned thoroughly as 20-25 cameras are there at every elevated station, while about 40 cameras would be there for an average underground metro station.

''All activities which take place inside the Metro premises will be recorded and kept for a fixed time period and can be used as conclusive evidence in cases involving any situation which might have developed in the Metro,''the DMRC spokesperson said.

The DMRC is also going to provide cameras inside all the Metro trains which will be procured in Phase - II, as a result of which more than 600 coaches in Phase-II will also have cameras watching all movements of passengers inside the trains. Thus, it will be possible to monitor all movements inside the stations and inside the trains also at a later date.
