Barrackpore, May 3 (UNI) Century-old Ishapur Rifle Factory(RFI) today launched its international quality .30-.06 sporting rifle.
Director General of Ordinance Factory(DGOF) and Chairman of Ordinance Factory's board Sudipto Ghodh, while formerly launching the sporting rifle at the factory permises near here in North 24 Parganas, said, ''The RFI, which has earned international fame in manufacturing of rifles of the likes of 7.62 SLR - the Ichhapur Rifle, has maintained its strategic development in designing and manufacturing different types of small arms of prohibited (assault) and civil category.'' He handed over a piece to each of the 12 arms dealers in the country ''The RFI has already received order for at least 10,000 sporting rifles of the new variety and it is estimated that the demand will rise to about 25,000 pieces,'' Mr Ghosh added.
The .30 inch calibre sporting rifle, priced at Rs 60,000 in the domestic market and Rs one lakh in the international market, has a magazine capacity of three rounds. Some dealers, however, observed that such sporting rifles should have a capacity of at least five rounds.
The DGOF earlier also inaugurated an arms museum at the factory premises that displayed more than 400 types of small amrs that is being used worldwide for more than 200 years.
''This will help the trainees of the factory in future, but we could not open it for the public for security reasons,'' he said.
While talking to newspersons here he expressed concern over the reduction in work load due to increasing corporatisation of ordinance factories.
Incidentally, the work load of this factory mainly depends on the orders of the Ministries of Defence and Home Affairs, Mr Ghosh said.
