Imphal, May 3: The United National Liberation Front (UNLF) has claimed responsibility for the attack on troops at Chandel District on May 1, in which two jawans died and four others sustained injuries.
Assam Rifles PRO Col Pant said here today that the troops of 6 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector under HQ IGAR (South), along with Quick Reaction Team (QRT), were proceeding to Phoilen, when they were ambushed at Phatphenkot area on May 1.
The ambush resulted in heavy exchange of fire between the troops and UNLF cadres. However, the militants managed to escape taking advantage of the inhospitable terrain.
Rfn/Dvr K Tirkey and Rfn/GD PT Baskar succumbed to their injuries while four other jawans were battling for their lives, the PRO added.
