Mumbai, May 2 (UNI) State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) chairman Shritij Vyas today directed Inspector General (Prison) to take appropriate action against the police officers, who had allegedly assaulted an accused in Arthur Road Jail on April 6 this year.
Accused Mukhtar Shaikh, who was arrested in noted criminal lawyer Majid Memon firing case on November 21, 2005, was allegedly assaulted by police officers in Arthur Road Prison.
After recording Shaikh's statement, who was produced before commission today, SHRC chairman Shritij Vyas directed IG (prison) to take appropirate action against the involved officers.
Advocate S Kunjuraman, representing Najma Shaikh, petitioner and wife of accused, said the commission took cognizance and directed IG (prison) to take action against the guilty.
Ms Najma stated in her petition that her husband was grievously assaulted by the jail authorities, who also concealed and destroyed the evidence of injuries sustained by Shaikh. The jail authorities also failed to give any medical aid to the accused.
It is further mentioned that to defend themselves, the jail authorities had, in an affidavit filed before the commission, said he had objected and misbehaved with the jail raiding party. To control him, the jail authorities had to use some force.
