Sumul Dairy contract labourers go on flash strike
Surat, May 1 (UNI) Drivers and loaders of Sumul Dairy here went on a flash strike, demanding compensation for the family members of a driver and loader, who were killed in a road accident at Olpad today.
After getting the sad news about their two colleagues, all the drivers and loaders started to assemble in the dairy premises and shunned work, demanding compensation from the authorities.
The drivers of 100 milk-supplying vans alleged that contractors were paying them less money and was providing no work security.
''We are paid just Rs 70 per day and have to work for 24 hours, which is very unjust. The contractors pay no heed to our demands, while dairy officials are of the opinion that they are the employees of contractors. We work in grave conditions yet paid pittance,'' Ramchandra Patil, contract driver of Sumul Dairy, complained.
The agitators, however, called off strike later after the intervention of contractors.
