Thiruvananthapuram, May 1: President Pratibha Devisingh Patil today visited the famous Padmanabhaswamy Temple here and offered prayers. She was in the temple for about 20 minutes. Ms Patil arrived in the temple in traditional Kerala ''Ksavau'' saree. The temple authorities explained the history of the temple managed by the erstwhile Travancore Royal family.
The Padmanabhaswany temple is a famous Hindu temple of Lord Vishnu.It is one of the 108 ''divya desams,'' the holiest abodes of Lord Vishnu. The main deity, lord Padmanabhaswamy, is a form of Vishnu in ''Anananthasayanam'' posture (in eternal sleep or yoganidra). The city of Thiruvananthapuram derives its name from the the presiding deity of the temple.
The centuries-old temple is a blend of the Kerala and Dravidian styles of architecture and is also known for its mural paintings and stone carvings.
