Bagalore, May 1 (UNI) Janata Dal(S) candidate M V Prasad Babu, popularly known as Kabaddi Babu, is making a bid to 'dismantle' the BJP citadel of Padmanabhanagara segment in Bangalore city in the elections to Karnataka Assembly this month.
According to him his strength is the fact that he is a sportsperson. He is equipped to serve the people better.
''A sportsperson offers total commitment to his team, whether it is at club level or the national team, plays his game with full zeal and is ready to sacrifice anything for his team,'' he says.
''The commitment is the same when it comes to serving the society.
You can't get a better candidate than a sportsman, who has served the country with distinction,'' Babu told UNI during his door-to-door campaign at Kaverinagar area in the city.
Babu, the lone sportsperson in fray for next month's elections, is well known as the 'right hand man' of former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy.
He is also known for his exploits as one of the best 'raiders' in the Indian Kabbadi team during 1980s. Sports had made him a better person and respond to people's problems with a clear mind.
''I have never tasted power yet. But I have indulged in social work for a long time. To do this, sports has helped me. I have built old age homes, orphanages, dug 45 bore wells for the poor and provided more than 150 water tankers for poor youth who are supplying water to a water starved area in my constituency. I get inspiration do such work because of my sports background,'' he says.
He is confident of his victory and one of the reasons for this is that more than 90 per cent of the minorities, numbering over 50,000 in the constituency with 2.26 lakh voters, would back him. The personal charisma of Mr Kumaraswamy would also bring him lot of votes mainly from the poorer sections of the voters, he claims.
