Implement panel recommendations on quota for judges: PMK
Villupuram, Tamil Nadu, May 1 (UNI) Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) Founder-Leader S Ramadoss today gave a call for implementing the recommendations of a Parliamentary Panel which advocated quota in the appointment of judges in the higher judiciary.
Speaking to newspersons at his Thailapuram Residence here, Dr Ramadoss said the parliamentary standing committee headed by Congress PM Sudarshan Nachiappan recommended the immediate introduction of quotas for SCs, STs and OBCs in appointments to higher judiciary.
Welcoming the panel's recommendations which not only paved the way for social justice but also sought to introduce transparency in the appointment of judges to High Courts and the Supreme Court, Dr Ramadoss said the names and details of the prospective judges must be made public at least six months before appointment as in the western countries.
The names must be placed before Parliament for discussion and the appointment confirmed after the debate concluded.
He said a national debate should be held on the process of appointing judges inviting opinion from legal experts and later, Parliament should implement the procedure.
The PMK will hold a discussion on the Nachiappan committee recommendations in Chennai, he added.
