Funds for desilting water channels in TN Dist

Ariyalur, Tamil Nadu, May 1: A sum of Rs 1.82 crore is to be spent for desilting and deepening channels, strengthening bunds, and repairing and replacing shutters of five anaicuts at Kulumur, Kaadur, Veeravasi, Marakkurichi and Chelliamman Odai and 18 lakes in Ariyalur District under the Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation and Water Bodies Restoration and Management Project (IAMWARM).

In a statement here today, District Collector R Sudalaikannan said works in the Anai Vari Odai Sub Basin would commence during June and completed in 14 months.

Out of the project cost, Rs ten lakh would be spent for ground water replenishment through percolation ponds and digging borewells and Rs two lakh for environmental development.

He said a group of agriculturists would be taken to a few model villages in Pudukkottai district tomorrow to study the technologies for improving productivity with judicious use of water.
