Imphal, Apr 30: Manipur is reeling under acute water crisis with the main water supply project at Singda near here not functioning properly.
Public Health Engineering Department Minister T N Haokip visited Singda yesterday and met the village chiefs to discuss about the maintenance of the dam.
The villagers also submitted a memorandum to the minister demanding formation of a committee to protect the dam, which supplied about four MGD of water in the state.
Mr Haokip had also inspected the dam areas on April 20 last and advised the engineers to take immediate steps to repair the valves of the dam.
According to reports from across the state, people were seen making long queues near tubewells and other sources of water.
Many have to depend on the water supplied by private tankers, who could meet the demands of only five to ten houses a day, whereas the demand was in thousands.
Most of the ponds have dried up with Nambul and Imphal rivers as the only source of survival.
Besides Singda, the Khuga and Thoubal Multipurpose Project and Dolaithabi Barrage were some of the new projects under construction.
