Beedi workers demand better deal
Gwalior, Apr 30 , 2008 : India's 'beedi' or hand-rolled traditional cigarette workers have demanded better deal as they bewail bad working conditions and low wages in beedi-making industry. Thousands of women in the predominantly unorganized sector work for long hours to roll beedi - tobacco rolled into tendu leaves - also called Indian cigars.
Most of the beedi manufacturing companies outsource bidi rolling to women for a paltry wage. They are on an average paid less than 50 rupees or $1.19 a day.
