Chennai, Apr 30 (UNI) The Indian team came up with an exceptional performance as Mahesh Mangaonkar of Maharashtra annexed the boys under-15 title in the German Open squash Championship held at Munich.
India's Chief Coach Cyrus Poncha, in a release here today, said Mahesh upset top seed Oliver Holland in a five set thriller.
Rahgav Meherotra, also from Mumbai, finished third in the boys under-13 category.
The players from ICL Academy brought more cheers as Anaka Alankamony, Anwesha Reddy and Ravi Dixit also brought home medals.
Anaka Alankamony, seeded 9/16, finished runner-up in the girls under-15. In the final, she lost to Amanda Sobhy of the US 5-9, 9-4, 10-8, 5-9, 0-9. En route to the final she defeated Milena Penkov (Switzerland) 9-3, 9-1, 9-3 in the first round, Veronika Kucerove of Slovakia in the quarterfinal 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 and third seed Llona Lagerweij (Netherlands) 9-1, 10-8, 9-2 in the semis.
Anwesh Reddy and Ravi Dixit both secured bronze in the girls and boys under-17 events, respectively.
In the first round, Anwesha beat Sabrina Rehman (Austria) 9-0, 9-0, 9-0, in the second round, she defeated Nikola Barlikova (Slovakia) 9-1, 9-1, 9-2 and in the quarter finals defeated Tesni Evans (Wales) 9-2, 5-9, 9-7, 3-9, 9-3.
Anwesha lost in the semi finals to top seed Kanzy El Defrawy (Egypt) 9-2, 9-2, 9-3.
Ravi Dixit, also seeded 9/16, finished third. In the first round, Ravi beat Alexandra Spreux (Belgium) 9-0,9-0,9-1, Patrik Rohan (Czech Republic) 9-0,9-0,9-3 in round 2, Robert Downer 7-9, 1-9, 9-3, 9-7, 9-6 in the pre-quarters. In the quarter finals, he defeated fourth seed Nicholas Hopcroft 9-6,8-10,9-1,9-0 before losing the semi finals to the eventual winner top seed Rudi Rohrmuller (Germany) 1-9, 0-9,5-9.
