HuM Chief killed in north Kashmir

Srinagar, Apr 30: The Jammu and Kashmir police have gunned down a self-styled Chief Commander (operations) of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) in a brief encounter in north Kashmir, a police spokesman said today.

He said a search operation was launched at Sopore, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir following a tip off that some militants were hiding near the quarters of old hospital.

When the police personnel were about to storm the hideout, the militants opened fire on them, and a militant was killed in the clash.

The slain militant was identified as Sajjad Afghani, who was active in north Kashmir for the past one decade.

The militant was involved in a number of militancy related incidents, the spokesman said adding some arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militant.
