Mumbai, Apr 30 (UNI) Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) spokesman Sanjay Nirupam today said the state government should accept ration cards as one of the identity proofs of being a resident of the city.
Talking to reporters here, Mr Nirupam said ration card is among the eight documents used to prove one's identity. But recently, the government had stated that they would not be acceptable as proofs.
He said the MPCC had received several complaints from various hutment dwellers, whose slums were demolished in developmental works like widening of Mithi river and construction of roads. The displaced people should be given a chance to prove their identity with the help of ration cards, he prayed.
Mr Nirupam also claimed that various industries in the state are still affected due to vacancy of skilled north Indian labourers, who had escaped to their hometowns after the violence unleashed by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists against them spread to different parts of the state.
