Imphal, Apr 29: Vehicular movement in all the market areas, especially at Thangal and Poona bazaar, here has been stopped following a series of bomb blasts in Manipur recently.
The state police and administration was compelled to take the step as a precautionary measure.
The areas have been sealed off and only pedestrians were allowed to enter, police said, adding security personnel were posted at every strategic place and combing operations are on.
A team from Delhi led by Union Cabinet Secretary M.Chandrasekhar also visited the areas to assess the situation.
A powerful bomb went off on NH 39, Imphal-Moreh road near the Manipur University here on April 27. Prior to this, another bomb exploded near the high security Babupara area, where all the MPs and MLAs reside, on April 24. Three people were injured in the blast.
Imphal West district Senior Superintendent of Police L Kailun informed that a drive was launched to clean the town area, ease traffic congestion and check entry of militants.
However, the CPI has threatened the government to launch a stir if restrictions on movement of vehicles were not removed by tomorrow.
