Sugar mills allowed to make ethanol directly from cane
Lucknow, Apr 29(UNI) In the wake of the increasing prices of petroleum products in the international market, Uttar Pradesh government today decided to amend the rule to allow the sugar mills to manufacture ethanol directly from sugarcane.
The decision was taken in a state cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Mayawati here.
After the amendment, sugar mills can now directly make ethanol and sugar from the cane.
The new move would certainly save foreign currency, while the sugar mills facing financial crisis due to slump in sugar price could also cover up their losses.
This will automatically help the mills to pay good price to the cane farmers while paying all their dues.
At present, the central government has made mixing of 5 per cent of ethanol in the petroleum products mandatory and it is likely to be hiked to 10 per cent very soon.
