Kolkata, Apr 29: The SUCI today criticised Congress president Sonia Gandhi for "shedding crocodile tears" for the people of Nandigram during her public meetings in the state yesterday.

''Mrs Gandhi went into a deep slumber between January last year and April 27 this year. So much so that she did not even notice the growing incidents of murders, rape and bloodshed in Nandigram during this period,'' Socialist Unity Centre of India West Bengal General Secretary Swapan Ghosh said in a statement here.

''The Congress party and the Central government did nothing to prevent the brutal killings in the state to continue hobnobbing with the CPI(M) in West Bengal,'' he remarked.

''People of this state will not be fooled by the Congress president's crocodile tears before the Panchayat elections,'' Mr Ghosh added.
