Guwahati, Apr 29 (UNI) The Assam government is formulating a rehabilitation package for the victims of the secret killing which occurred between 1998-2001.
Addressing a press conference, Assam health minister and spokesman of Assam Government Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today said the rehab package was being done as per the judicial commission recommendations.
During 1998-2001 hundreds of people were eliminated through extra judicial killings by the state police using the surrendered ULFA members. Most of the victims were close relatives of the top ULFA leaders and as a part of counter-insurgency plan, these victims had been targeted.
Dr Sarma, however, assured that all law abiding victims, despite their relationship with the ULFA leadership, would be given rehabilitation through economic package, jobs or financial help.
Almost the entire top brass of the ULFA leadership's family bore the brunt of the secret killings.
It was a major election plank of the Congress which got the whole secret killing episode thoroughly inquired by two judicial commissions.
The Opposition has been criticising the Congress of using the report of judicial commission for their own political mileage. But Dr Sarma today insisted that the Assam government would never do that and see that the victims were properly rehabilitated.
