Mumbai, Apr 29 (UNI) Ranchi XI and Orissa XI scored facile wins over their opponents Combined South Zone and Resita XI respectively on the opening day of the fourth All India Tommy Emar Women's Gold Cup hockey tournament at the Mahindra stadium here today.
Ranchi XI blanked Combined South Zone 4-0 in a pool 'A' league match, while Orissa XI won 6-0 against the local Resita XI in a pool 'B' match.
Ranchi XI took some time to warm up, but soon found their rhythm and with their superior fitness ran circles round the rival citadel.
They took the lead in the 23rd minute, going up by 1-0 against the Combined South Zone side.
The Ranchi girls increased their lead in the 34th minute through Suchita Bhengra, who then completed her brace in the 41st minute, with a brilliant field goal to put her side 3-0 up.
Combined South Zone's misery was complete when Shashi Pradhan scored in the 50th minute to put Ranchi up 4-0. The Ranchi girls should have won by a much bigger margin, but they wasted as many as 10 penalty corners and had to be satisfied with a 4-0 scoreline.
In the pool 'B' match Resita XI proved no match for the Orissa girls with Sunita Barva leading the goal scorers with a brace, as they blanked the local side with a tennis like scoreline winning 6-0.
Sunita Barva began scoring in the very first minute, when she converted a brilliantly taken indirect penalty corner and then completed her brace in the 28th minute as the teams went into the break with the Orissa girls leading 2-0.
After the change of ends Orissa were all over the Resita girls citadel with Binita Kinda, Punam Barla, Lilima Minz and Paulina Barua completing the tally.
