Puducherry, Apr 29: The Puducherry administration is taking effective measures to prevent the sale of pirated VCDs in the Union Territory, Chief Minister N Rangasamy told the Legislative Assemby today.
Replying to a question by Mr Om Sakthi Sekhar (AIADMK), Mr Rangasamy said the administration was periodically conducting raids and cases under IPC and Copyright Act 1957 were being registered against the offenders.
In the last three years, as many as 61 cases under the Copyright Act and four cases under IPC were registered and 36 people were arrested in 2005, 19 in 2006 and 88 in 2007, he added.
Mr Sekhar pointed out that several cinema theatres in Puducherry were closed down due to circulation of pirated VCDs.
Stating that the film producers were badly affected, he displayed pirated VCDs of two new Tamil films in the House.
