Surat SEZ record exports of Rs 12,552 cr
Mumbai, Apr 28: The Surat Special Economic Zone (SSEZ), developed by Diamond and Gems Development Corporation Limited, has achieved a record exports worth Rs 12552.53 crore during the fiscal ended March 31 this year.
In the previous fiscal, the exports were worth Rs 7298 crore, SSEZ CMD S N Sharma said while talking to UNI today. Mr Sharma pointed out that SSEZ, which is the country's first SEZ in the private sector, had started with a small exports figure of Rs 50 crore but has grown rapidly ever since.
The SSEZ has 162 operating units which together provide direct or indirect employment to over 18,000 people. The SEZ has units from various sectors including diamond cutting and polishing, jewellery, engineering,pharmaceuticals, textiles, and home furnishings. Much of the exports has been the contribution of the gems and jewellery units.
Mr Sharma expresed confidence that the units will continue to cater to the world markets by producing world class products at competitive prices. He said that the best of technology and productivity tools would be employed to sustain this growth.
