Speedy truck kills 71 goats, sheep in Udhampur

Jammu, Apr 28 (UNI) A speedy truck crushed 71 animals including goats and sheep to death and injured at least 30 others on Dhar Road in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said today.

'' Truck ran over the livestock of a 'Bakkerwal' (tribal nomad) killing 71 goats and sheep early yesterday,'' police said, adding that at least 30 animals were injured in the accident.

Many animals got stuck in the wheels and the chassis of the truck, which was carrying stones.

One Bakkerwal boy, identified as Mumtaz, was also injured in the incident.

The 'Dera' (a group of Bakkerwals and their livestock) belonged to one Alam Din of Nud, claimed that he had incurred an estimated loss of Rs six lakh in the mishap.

With the beginning of summer, 'Deras' of the 'Bakkerwals' start moving towards higher reaches and return back with the onset of winters.
