Demo outside Parl't on May 1

Bhopal, Apr 28 (UNI) The Gas Peedit Nirashrit Pensionbhogi Sangharsh Morcha will stage a massive demonstration outside Parliament on Labour Day to highlight economic, social and environmental problems of those affected by the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy.

''The remainder compensation amount of Rs 1,500 crore should be doled out forthwith and a case registered against Union Carbide's present owner Dow Chemical Company for damaging environment,'' Morcha President Balkrishna Namdeo said in a statement issued here today.

Demanding that the cost of cleaning up the chemical waste in the now-closed Carbide plant be extracted from Dow, he added that destitute Gas Tragedy-affected widows be given a monthly pension of Rs 1,000.

''Poor people, widows and handicapped below 65 years of age should also be given the benefit of the Indira Gandhi Old Age Pension Scheme and the Poverty line should be in proportion to present prices. The Morcha members will leave here on April 30,'' she added.
