3 Indian rowers qualify for Beijing Olympics

By Staff
Beijing, Apr 27: Indian rowers put up a superb performance as three of them booked their berths for the Olympics after winning the qualifying tournament here today.

Bajrang Lal qualified in the Open Singles Scull event while Manjeet Singh and Devender Kumar won the Light Weight Doubles Scull event. The Indians' achievements are all the more creditable since their oars had been misplaced by Thai Airways, which forced them to miss practice for several days after arriving here. Rowing Federation of India (RFI) president C P Singh Deo was elated with the results.

''It is the best ever result we have achieved in Olympic qualifiers,'' he said. ''In Athens and Sydney just one boat from India qualified.'' The rowers will return to India tomorrow.
