Gilchrist powers Deccan Chargers to facile 10 wicket win

By Staff

Mumbai, Apr 27 (UNI) Adam Gilchrist smashed the fastest 100 in a Twenty20 game in just 42 balls as Deccan Chargers routed the Mumbai Indians by ten wickets in their DLF Indian Premier League match being played at the D Y Patil stadium near here today.

With this win, Deccan Chargers opened their account, relegating Mumbai Indians to the wooden spoonist spot having lost all the four matches they have played so far.

Set a target of 155 to win by the Mumbai Indians, the crowd at the D Y Patil were treated to a scintillating display of power hitting by the recently retired Australian wicket keeper as he made mockery of the total posted by the hosts with Deccan Chargers reaching their target in just 12 overs with all the ten wickets still left standing. Gilchrist was unbeaten on 109 in just 47 balls with nine boundaries and 10 sixes included in it, while V V S Laxman was unbeaten on 36 in 29 balls with five fours. Deccan Chargers made 155 for no loss with still 8 overs remaining.

It was raining sixes and fours from the bat of the former Australian wicketkeeper as he started his onslaught with two fours in the first over from Ashish Nehra.

He then went on to treat all the bowlers with disdain as the ball disappeared to all parts of the ground.

Gilchrist kept something special for Shaun Pollock as the Mumbai Indians stand in captain was hit was three sixes and a four of consecutive balls as Deccan Chargers marched to victory in a canter.

He then took to Abhishek Nayar as he hit the Mumbai Ranji pacer for three sixes in one over to bring up his 100 in just 42 balls with nine boundaries and a six. When the victory runs were scored Gilchrist was unbeaten on 109 runs in 47 balls with 9 fours and 10 sixes in the knock.

At the other end he was given excellent support by V V S Laxman who was as much as a spectator as those in the stands. Laxman finished with 37 runs of 26 balls and his knock was inclusive of four boundaries and a six.

None of the bowling figures of the Mumbai Indians made for happy reading with captain Shaun Pollock going for 33 runs in his 2 overs, while Abhishek Nayar went for 22 in one over.
