16 children die of gastro enteritis in Hailakandi
Silchar, April 27 (UNI) At least 16 children, aged between two and three years, died in the remote Hailakandi district of Assam bordering Mizoram over the past one month due to gastro enteritis, official sources said here today.
DC (Hailakandi) Tapan Chandra Goswami said that soon after reports of the deaths came, medical teams were sent to the affected areas and health camps were organised. The situation brought was under control, he added.
Hailakandi district Joint Director of Health Samir Kumar Das today said 50 more children in this district have been suffering from fever and gastro enteritis and that medical teams had so far been taking care of the young children, who had fallen ill in the district.
The affected villages were Lalcherra, Dholcherra-Bilaipur, Kacharithal, Manipurithal and Kundanala in the district. All the children belonged to tribal families, Mr Das said.
