New Delhi, Apr 26 : A high-level meeting to review the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) after witnessing heavy traffic snarls on the 5.8-km stretch from Ambedkar Nagar to Moolchand in South Delhi, is being chaired by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at her residence today.
On Friday, Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta said, "We will construct two or three foot-overbridges or subways to make it easier for pedestrians."
Mehta, along with senior officials of the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS), a public-private joint venture that runs the BRTS, held meetings with resident welfare associations to talk to them about the advantages of the BRT system.
Earlier, Sheila Dikshit had said the project could be scrapped, if the traffic problems are not resolved.
The Delhi Government has already put work on other new corridors on hold. The total cost of the 15.5-km long Ambedkar Nagar-Delhi Gate corridor is estimated to be Rs.2.15 billion.
The BRTS requires a dedicated lane on the road just like the tracks for trains. It may vary widely depending on the requirements, but broadly includes segregated bus-ways, rapid boarding and alighting, dedicated stations, pre-board fare collection, and transit prioritisation at intersections, among other features.
The BRTS corridor on each side has four lanes - meant for buses, two-wheelers and cars, cyclists and pedestrians. The width of the bus lane is 3.5 metres, while that of two-wheelers and cars is seven metres, and cyclists and pedestrians each have two-metre wide lane.
