Kazan, Apr 26: Riding on in-form striker Rani Devi's three goals, India thrashed France 7-0 for their second win as they ended their league assignment with six points in the Women's Olympic Hockey qualifier here today.
For the winners who led 3-0 at half time, goal scorers were Rani Devi(4th, 54th, 70th), Surinder Kaur(6th, 45th), Rajwinder Kaur (17th) and Jasjeet Kaur (66th). The impressive win, though helped India salvage bit of their reputation, came too late and they had to be satisfied at taking the fourth place in the six -nation tournament. Intrestingly, India started the tournament with a win - against Russia - and ended with a win but in between lost three matches in a row and that destroyed their hopes of making it to the Beijing Olympics.
In a one sided match, India should have won by much bigger margin but for the muffed chances. Their forwards dominated the procedings but they turned out to be poor shooters.
The Indians were in the lead in the 4th minute when Rani Devi latched on to a ball on the flank and dogged past couple of defenders to send the ball home (1-0).
Two minutes later, Indians forced their first penalty corner and Surinder Kaur with a powerful drive from top of the circle sent the ball into cage (2-0).
The lead went up in the 17th minute when Rajwinder Kaur made no mistake in converting the second penalty corner.
The Indian domination was total with French women having no clue as how to tackle their rampaging rivals.
Indians forced the third penalty corner in the 27th minute which was wasted and then Mamta Kharab set up Pritam Siwach who missed an open goal.
Just before the breather it was Kharab's turn to miss an open goal when she missed the target by a whisker.
France tried to put up some resistance in the second session but though they fought with all they had, they were no match for the Indians.
Four goals in a space of 25 minutes took India's tally to formidable 7-0 as the French defence collapsed.
Ten minutes into the second half Surinder Kaur slammed her second and team's fourth goal. Nine minutes later Rani Devi made it 5-0 and four minutes before the end Jasjeet Kaur shot home the sixth goal.
Few seconds before the final whistle Rani Devi completed the tally as she smashed her third and team's seventh goal.
