Kolkata, Apr 26 (UNI) BJP supporters today staged a demonstration in front of the Eden Gardens demanding ban on cheergirls performing at the IPL cricket matches.
Shouting slogans against BCCI president Sharad Pawar and the West Bengal government, the demonstrators also burnt an effigy of Mr Pawar. They threatened to organise a bigger demonstration on April 29, the day Kolkata Knight Riders would take on Mumbai Indians.
BJP state unit secretary Rahul Sinha alleged that Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee was allowing such activities on the field.
"Our Chief Minister is known for his cultural learnings, but he has said nothing in this regard. Our culture is very rich and such activities should be banned immediately," he said.
Mr Sinha asked why should skimpily dressed women be brought from Europe and America instead of local artists regaling spectators with Indian dances.
The BJP leader said the BJP Mahila Morcha members would stage a demonstration outside the Eden Gardens on April 29 if the cheerleaders were not banned immediately.
