New Delhi, Apr 24 (UNI) UPA Chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi today released a copy of the expert committee report on women empowerment in panchayats on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the setting up of the Panchayati Raj institutions in the country.
Addressing a huge gathering of panchayats, who came from various parts of the country, Ms Gandhi urged them to work relentlessly for the welfare of the poor in the rural parts of the country.
Earlier, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stressed the need for sharing collective responsibility for obtaining better results through Panchayati Raj institutions.
On the occasion, Dr Singh said despite spending an unprecedented quantum of money ''we are not getting the desired results''.
He said, '' Mahatma Gandhi had a vision of an India where people of the villages would have self-government.'' He said the Panchayati Raj institution plays a great role in the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), Bharat Nirman project and National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).
Dr Singh said, '' We are giving importance to the direct participation of panchayats in the management of education, sanitation and health in rural India.'' With this the three-day convention of the panchayats ended here.
