Shivajirao Deshmukh re-elected as Council chairman
Mumbai, Apr 25 (UNI) Senior Congress leader Shivajirao Deshmukh has been re-elected unopposed as chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council.
Mr Deshmukh's name was proposed by Leader of the Opposition Pandurang Phundkar and seconded by Shiv Sena group leader Diwakar Raote.
On behalf of the Congress, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh's brother Dilip proposed Mr Deshmukh's name and was seconded by Mr Ulhas Pawar.
Mr Deshmukh's name was proposed by Mr Arun Gujarathi on behalf of the NCP and was seconded by Usha Darade.
Mr Deshmukh had served as an MLA from 1978 to 1995 and had also headed the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee. He has been a member of the Upper House since 1996. He was re-elected for a third term in the Legislative Council during the recent biennial elections.
