Relay hunger strike by Tibetans enters 31st day
Dehra Dun, Apr 25 (UNI) The relay hunger strike by Tibetans here entered its 31st day today.
The strike, being held at Gandhi Park, has become a means of expressing solidarity for other Tibetans worldwide, staging anti-Chinese protests.
However, the motive behind the strike is not resentment against the Beijing Olympics, but the fulfilment of a 10-point charter of demands by the Chinese Government.
'' Our strike will continue till our 10-point charter of demands, stipulated by the Tibetan Solidarity Committee, is fulfilled by the Chinese Government'', Secretary of the Hunger Strike Tanzing said.
Everyday, 50 Tibetans gather at Gandhi Park and pray before the picture of the Dalai Lama, sometimes organising candle light vigils or rallies to focus attention to their cause.
The six-point charter of demands calls for the intervention of the UN and the international community to ensure the immediate despatch of fact-finding delegations to Tibet, freedom of press to cover the whole of Tibet, end brutal killings, release imprisioned and arrested Tibetans, provide the injured medical assistance and allow free movement of people and provide them access to daily needs.
