Rich tributes paid to Babu Parmanad

Jammu, Apr 24 (UNI) Rich tributes were paid to former Haryana Governor Babu Parmanand who died after prolonged illness at his residence here early today.

Several prominent people, including BJP leader L K Advani, arrived at Shashtri Nagar cremation ground to pay last respects of the departed leader.

Jammu and Kashmir state observed state mourning and ordered holiday in government offices and educational institutions. The Tricolour and the state flag were also kept flying half-mast.

To express condolences to the bereaved family, Governor Lt Gen (Retd) S K Sinha visited the residence of Babu Parmanand at Gandhi Nagar and laid floral wreath on his mortal remains.

On behalf of the Governor of Haryana, Mr A R Kidwai, the ADC to Governor, Jammu and Kashmir, placed wreath on the mortal remains of Babu Parmanand.

Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, while paying last respects to the departed leader, recalled his contribution as an elected representative, Minister and Speaker of the state Legislative Assembly.

Born on August 10, 1932 in Sarore village of R S Pura sector, Babuji, as he was called by his friends and supporters, was a post-graduate in Economics and also completed his LLB in 1958-59.

Inspired by the then Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad to contest the Assembly elections, Babuji contested Assembly elections seven times and won six times.

In 1996 he resigned from the National Conference and joined the BJP. He had also unsuccessfully contested the Parliamentary elections as an independent candidate from Jammu Lok Sabha seat.
