Chandigarh, Apr 24 (UNI) Hockey Olympian Tarlochan Singh Bawa, 85, who represented India in the 1948 London Olympics, died at his daughter's residence in Ambala this morning.
He is survived by two daughters and one son.
His son, Sukhwinder Singh Bawa, a cricket coach with the Sports Authority of India, was in Chandigarh at the time of his father's death.
''This morning my father went for a normal walk, had breakfast and after reading newspapers, he placed these on the floor and his mobile over the newspapers before he died in his chair,'' said Sukhwinder, who had rushed to Ambala after getting the news.
Tarlochan Singh was born on February 12, 1923, at Lahore (Pakistan). He joined the Punjab Police in 1949 and retired as Superintendent of Police in Haryana.
Expressing deep shock over the demise of Tarlochan Singh, three-time Olympian Pargat Singh said ''He was the father figure for budding players and had a long association with hockey. His death has left a void which will be difficult to be filled. He was one of the most respected hockey Olympians.'' Bawa would l be cremated tomorrow at Top Khaana Bazar cremation ground in Ambala Cantonment.
