Shame on Meghalaya for not having airports:Congress
Shillong, Apr 23 (UNI) Congress legislators in Meghalaya Assembly today asked the government to provide infrastructure requirements for making the two airports functional in the state.
''It's a shame for Meghalaya, even after 36 years of statehood, it does not have a proper airport,'' Congress legislator Martin M Danggo said, urging the government to fasten steps to make the two airports in the state.
Though, Meghalaya have two airports-- Umroi and Baljek-- but these have failed to function due to lack of infrastructure.
Leader of Opposition D D Lapang (Cong) asked the government to take up the matter with the Airport Authority of India to fasten the infrastructural requirements to put Meghalaya a reality in the airmap.
Earlier, transport minister Nimarson Momin informed the House that the delay of further providing infrastructure to the Baljek airport in Garo Hills was mainly due to law and order problem.
The Baljek airport was sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 12.21 crore in March 1995.
