Mumbai, Apr 23 (UNI) The new chairman of the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) Om Puri today said he would try to promote the concept of cooperative production of films during his tenure.
He told newsmen here that under this concept, an agreement will be reached between NFDC and established names, whereby the actor will charge a subsidised rate. The remaining amount would be his share in the production cost, which could be recovered from the box office.
''This concept only applies to established names in the industry'' he said, adding ''the idea behind this is to promote new and upcoming filmmakers and experimental projects.'' The veteran actor joined an illustrious list of artists like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Hema Malini in heading NFDC. ''It took me a couple of days to reply to the offer and I was filled with the same kind of nervousness that affects actors and inspires them to give their best. NFDC has shaped my career and it is an honour to be the Chairman,'' said the self-effacing actor.
He said the aim of NFDC was not to produce box office hits, but promote new talent and sound causes. However, viability was an important issue on deciding on a project, as it should be able to stand on its own.
He also plans to hold script committees and workshops during his three-year tenure.
