2 killed in police firing in Maharashtra

Jalgaon, Maharashtra, Apr 23: Two people were killed in a police firing following a clash between two groups belonging to different communities in Lohiyanagar area of Chopd tehsil, 70 km from here.

Police sources said people from a particular community were celebrating a marriage last night. The scuffle started when people from another community objected to a particular song being played during the celebrations. The two groups clashed leading to a riot-like situation in the area, police said.

The police rushed to the spot and tried to control the situation but with no other options left had to resort to firing to control the unruly groups, police sources said.

The deceased have been indentified Sanjay Laxman Choudhury, an autorichkshaw driver and Deepak Atmaram Mahajan.

Seven peoples, including five policemen were injured in stone puting between the groups.

Additional SP Dilip Sawant immediately rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation and informed that curfew has been imposed in the area as well as the neighbouring areas in order to avoid any further clash.
