Gurgaon, Apr 22 (UNI) Kapil Kumar shot a one-under par 71 to take the opening round honours in the LG ITC Classic Open Amateur golf championship at the Classic Golf Resort here today.
A bright start, where he made a birdie on the opening hole was followed by successive bogeys on the next two holes. One more on the fifth ensured that Kapil took the turn at two-over.
Playing some steady golf, Kapil not only erased those mistakes but went one better signing off with a birdie on the 18th.
The other two birdies came on the 14th and 15th with the one of the latter being his pick. After hitting his drive into the fairway bunker, he drew the ball onto the green and holed the ensuing eight-footer for a birdie.
''The conditions were hot out there. But playing against the best brings out the best in you. I was upset after the back-to-back bogeys but was determined in my back nine,'' Kapil said, who now trains under renowned coach Romit Bose. ''Its always good to lead but this is only the first round and we have 54 more holes to go. Anything can happen,'' he added.
Meanwhile, Sourav Bahuguna, Amanjyot Singh, S Rudresh, HS Kang and Rashid Khan were breathing down the leader's neck, trailing by a solitary stroke.
Abhishek Jha, SK Lakra, Pawan Kumar, Kanishk Madan and Rahul Sikand were all tied for the seventh place at one-over 73.
