Chamling lays foundation stone for Khel Gaon

Gangtok, Apr 22 (UNI) Chief Minister Pawan Chamling today laid the foundation stone for the Khelgaon complex at Reshithang between Gangtok and its adjoining hill Ranka, about 10 kms near the capital.

The Khelgaon is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 40 crores of which a sum of Rs 22.89 crores had already been sanctioned for the project. The project was sanctioned by the Union Ministry of Sports and Youth affairs and according to the detailed project report, the cost has been kept at Rs 40 crores.

The state government had already acquired 12 acres of land for the purpose and additional 100 acres of land adjoining the area would be acquired for additional facilities. The construction is being taken up by the National Building Construction Corporation(NBCC), who has been entrusted by the state government to take up the project. The Ministry of Development of North eastern region(DONER) is also assisting in the project.

The work is to be taken up in four phases and work for the first phase had already started from October last year In the initial phase the track and field encircling an international size football field would be built. According to the NBCC general manager A K Vasisth, a 400 metre synthetic track (8 tracks) would be built encircling the football field. Later additional facilities are also likely to be added including the stadium stands. Training centres and other additional facilities would also be part of the Khel Gaon.

Chamling who laid the foundation stone said that the governments plan was to make the Khel Gaon of international standards and sought the contribution and cooperation of the public to live this dream.

The government is developing infrastructure and creating assets for the state and its people. The public should use the benefits as they are directly beneficiaries as well as be custodians for its care and upkeep, he said.
