Bhopal, Apr 21 (UNI) The Madhya Pradesh Police's head constables will henceforth be empowered to bear revolvers, a privilege hitherto restricted to assistant sub-inspectors and their seniors, official sources said today.
Until now, rifles were the service weapons of only the head constables. In the first phase, such personnel posted in urban police stations would be handed revolvers that were being purchased under a modernisation scheme and after an amendment in the Police Regulation Act.
The proposal was forwarded by the Police Headquarters to the Home Department. The former felt that it was difficult to fire, at attacking armed anti-socials, from rifles while in a moving patrol vehicle and that also endangered the of passerley lives. Some personnel were severely injured in such attacks.
