New Delhi, Apr 21 : Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh today informed the Rajya Sabha that the Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs) might increase their tuition fees.

Arjun Singh said that the Standing Committee of the IIT Council (SCIC) has recommended an increase in tuition fee for B Tech and M Tech courses.

Information about the quantum of fee hike at IITs and when it will come into effect were not given by the Minister. The information comes close on the heels of the Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs) deciding to increase their fees for their two-year post-graduate programmes. While IIM Ahmedabad has decided to increase the fee from the current Rs five lakh for both years of the course to Rs 11.5 lakh, IIM Bangalore would increase its fee to Rs nine lakh from Rs five lakh. IIM Kolkata has similarly decided to increase the fee to Rs six lakh for the entire course from Rs Rs 3.75 lakh at present. IIM Kozhikode has decided to increase the fee to Rs six lakh for the two-year programme from Rs 3.85 lakh.

"There is no proposal before the Government as of now to set up an independent Regulatory Authority for Higher Education," Minister of State for Human Resource Development Daggubati Purandareswari said to a separate question.
