Ahmedabad, Apr 20 (UNI) The Special Investigation Team (SIT), reinvestigating the post Godhra riots of 2002 has arrested an absconding accused involved in Gulburg Society massacre.
This was the first arrest made by the SIT, which was constituted on a direction by the Supreme Court to reinvestigate ten major cases of post-Godhra riots.
Twentyeight-year-old Parbatsinh Thakore was nabbed yesterday from Banaskantha.
In the Gulburg Society massacre, 39 people, including Ahsan Jafri and a Parsi boy Azhar Mody, were killed by the mob, which allegedly included Thakore, who had received a bullet injury when Mr Jafri had fired from his gun in self defence.
SIT sources said the arrest of Thakore could throw light on what had happened on that fateful day. During these six years, Thakore had changed his name to Dharshansinh and Darpansinh to mislead the investigating agencies.
The Supreme Court, on a petition seeking investigation into the riots by an outside agency, had appointed SIT, which is led by former CBI Director R K Raghavan, directing it to submit its report within three months.
