London, April 19 : Hip-hop star Akon has been accused of fabricating details of his hard-knock criminal life.

A review of the singer's rap sheet by The Smoking Gun Web site has found that Akon made up details about his criminal past in a bid to win "street cred".

The website claims that that the Don't Matter singer, who has banked on prison-scarred life to succeed in the music biz, has fabricated the amount of time he's spent in jail.

According to Akon, he was jailed for four years for heading a car-theft gang.

The 35-year-old once bragged he faced up to 75 years in jail and that he wrote many of his hits, including Locked Up, behind bars.

However, the Smoking Gun reports that most of his claims are false, reports The Sun.

In their lengthy investigation through police and court records, the US based website checked court and police documents to try to discover the truth about Akon.

They found that Akon has spent a total of five months in prison. His rap sheet does show a half-dozen arrests, but he's only been convicted of one felony charge for gun possession - and got three months probation.

They also discovered that the singer was arrested several times but never jailed for four years for car theft.

Akon's spokesman has refused to comment on the matter.
