Tiruchirapalli, Apr 18 (UNI) Sanitary workers and overhead tank operators of over 12,000 village panchayats across Tamil Nadu have threatened to go on strike if their charter of demands were not implemented by the government.

A decision to this effect was adopted at the meeting of the Federation of Local Body Employees Union, affiliated to the Centre of Trade Unions (CITU), here yesterday.

Soon after the meeting CITU state General Secretary A Soundarajan told mediapersons that the strike notice would be given to the Government on April 28 and the strike would begin from June second week, if the government failed to implement the charter of demands.

He pointed out that the sanitary workers and overhead tank operators working in 12,618 panchayats in the state were being paid a meagre amount of Rs 600 as consolidated pay per month. The workers were not paid monthly salary and they were not entitled to any medical facilities and gratuity.

He wanted that the workers should be given minimum salary of Rs 3,000 per month.
