Agartala, Apr 18 (UNI) Even as the Opposition parties welcomed Tripura Food and Civil Supplies minister Sahid Chowdhury's resignation, supporters from his constituency Boxonagar went on a rampage today, burning vehicles and blocking road for more than four hours and later called an indefinite strike.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister resigned from cabinet yesterday giving into the Opposition parties' demand.
The Opposition had been demanding the resignation of the Minister for the last several weeks charging him with having connection with arrested Bangladeshi criminal Mamun Mia, who is said to be a HUJI activist from the neighbouring country.
After the news of the minister's resignation trickled yesterday, the agitated supporters took to streets this morning and closed the road from Agratala to Boxongar for more than four hours and set ablaze some vehicles as mark of protest.
Police soon cordoned off the area and after discussion with SDPO Sonamura Kamalendu Chakraborty, the protesters finally withdrew their road blockade. Though the road blockade was withdrawn, the supporters of the Minister had called an indefinite strike in Boxonagar.
Speaking to UNI, Mr Chakraborty said ''the situation is under control and no report of any major violence has been reported so far.'' UNI XC KK SP KN2013
